Rules of Engagement for the Forum

Here are the basic rules for using the forums: - First and foremost, be nice when using The Comics Alternative forum. Think of this as akin to the Golden Rule: do unto others, and all of that. - Do not provide spoilers. If you want to share an ending, plot twist, or narrative disclosure that might ...

Re: Free Comic Book Day 2014

As you may tell from the podcast episode we recorded on Saturday( http://comicsalternative.com/2014/05/05/episode-81-1/ ), my local shop, Collected Comics, had a very active FCBD. I was impressed at the number of local artists they brought in, as well as a few podcasters/bloggers. What struck me was...

Re: Free Comic Book Day 2014

Next year, I think it would be great if Andy and I encouraged all listeners of the podcast to go to their local shops on FCBD and interview a creator or two who may be there as a guest. They could send us the audio clips and we'd string them together in a wide-ranging series of conversations. Should...

Re: Recommendations Thread

I read Shigeru Mizuki's Kitaro over the holidays, and the two Showa books -- the 1926-1939 that came out last year, as well as the 1939-1944 that comes out next month -- are definitely on my to-read list. In fact, my 2014 New Year's non-resolution resolution (since I don't believe in New Year resolu...

Re: Shifting Between Superhero and Non-Superhero Comics

Funny that you should use a comparison between oral tales and novels, Kenneth. That's actually a distinction that Terrence R. Wandtke makes in his book, The Meaning of Superhero Comic Books (which I'm currently reading now). He argues that the superhero genre and the way it functions with both creat...

Re: Free Comic Book Day 2014

I was just thinking of that today, Andy. Next year I might make it a BIG day on FCBD by going to a variety of comic shops in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (not just two closest to me), and see if I can interview some of the creators they have hanging out at those places.

Re: Books About Comics

I think the Eisner and the Abel/Madden books are good from a creator's perspective. You might also want to check out McCloud's other two books: Reinventing Comics and Making Comics . The latter is more like the Abel/Madden book, one about the process. The Gravett was actually reviewed on The Comics ...

Re: COMIX BOOK

Craig - Glad you're enjoying episode 83. We had wanted to talk about Best of Comix Book sooner, but there's just so much we want to review at any particular point. So the book had to wait its turn. The Vance intro in Comix Book is really good, but it's not as substantial as the one Brownstein writes...

Re: Love and Rockets

I know that some will probably disagree with this, but I'd strongly recommend starting at the beginning. You can do this now, and "easily" enough, with the Love & Rockets Library editions that Fantagraphics began releasing in 2007. These are the most recent repackaging of all the Love ...
